QwestOffice.net blocks port 25 (outbound) and other problems...

We recently 'upgraded' a client of ours to QwestOffice.net from Qwest.net, which will be required of all business users as they 'upgrade' their email system. It is still unclear to me as to what this 'upgrade' actually changes, besides everyone's email address (from *@Qwest.net to *@QwestOffice.net). This is painful enough for many business users. They'll have to change business cards, letterheads, etc.

It doesn't stop there, though. Qwest decided to block port 25 (outbound). I can only assume that this is a futile attempt to stop spam? For those people that just use the DSL for internet connectivity and have their email hosted elsewhere, this can cause problems.

You're going to have to use Qwest's SMTP servers to relay your messages out, which brought up another issue. Their online documentation (http://www.qwestoffice.net/newemailtutorials/index.html) only shows you the option for the SSL connection on port 465. This did not always work, and after a few calls with their tech support, I was finally able to get the non-SSL port which is 587. I was told that it's pretty common for people not to be able to connect via SSL to their server(s). You will also need a valid QwestOffice.net email address and password to authenticate on the outgoing SMTP server.

It's just amazing to me that a company can take a simple thing like email and make it so unnecessarily complicated.

/end rant
